VIN it is used for identification of the car and it can be useful at acquisition of spare parts. The manufacturer adheres to the international standards, therefore VIN consists of 17 signs and has the following structure (on an example of petrol models):

Begins VIN with the international code of the manufacturer (World Manufacturer Identifier) which settles down on the first position and consists of three signs.
The letter To means the country of the company-manufacturer (Korea), N serves for a designation of mark of the car (KIA), the third letter in the international code of the manufacturer specifies in a car category, where:
A — the Car
C — the Truck
D — Off-road cars and other vehicles falling under categories SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) and MPV (Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle)
E — the Cars intended for the European market
H — Minibuses
J — the Car (Ford)

It is necessary to notice that cars KIA of the Russian assemblage, in particular production of the company of Joint-Stock Company "ԫԫ", have other international code - Х4Х. By the way, the appendix #2 to approval of type of a vehicle (the document describing marks of the car) establishes following locations of a VIN-code: on the tablet of the manufacturer; in a luggage space, on a vertical wall in a niche of fastening of a jack; on a forward part of a frame on the right side. |
The second position (that is following two signs) serves for a designation of type of a vehicle. For example, JA = KIA Sportage, FA = KIA Sephia, etc.
The third position (the sixth and seventh signs) specifies in a variant of execution of a body. Concerning KIA Sportage they can be the following:

After body type (the fourth position) there is an engine coding, where

The fifth position (the ninth sign) declares type of transmission and a variant of execution of a transmission.
Further, on the sixth position, there is a sign on instructions of year of release of the car: system industrial chronology at KIA differs nothing from other automobile manufacturers:
